With a population of approximately 330,000 residents, including 90,000 children and young people, Wigan Borough is one of the largest Boroughs in Greater Manchester. Wigan is an attractive, historic market town surrounded by countryside and green space – from agricultural land to landscaped parks.
Famous for its historical cotton and coal industries, the Borough’s industrial past has lead to some long-rooted health issues, including lower than average healthy life expectancy and high levels of diabetes and health related illnesses. The Borough also has some areas of high deprivation.
Our local approach – the Wigan Deal, is about working with local residents to improve services, quality of life and create community cohesion. At its heart are the principles of responsibility and togetherness to tackle our challenges. The updated Deal 2030, included input from hundreds of staff across the public sector and thousands of local residents. Its principles and ways of working are at the heart of the Healthier Wigan Partnership, the local Integrated Care Partnership.
